Owned and Operated by Yancoal Australia, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an open cut mine that provides the opportunity to live and work locally. Located 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, MTW relies on both dragline and load haul systems for their continuous operations. The MTW Mine is the largest open cut operation in the region, employing approximately 1,450 people who reside in the local and surrounding communities.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated Superintendent Drill and Blast Engineering to join the Technical Services team. Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will be responsible for delivering effective drill and blast designs and schedules. This role requires strong communication and engagement within the Technical Services team and Site Operations and is responsible for the coaching and guidance of Drill and Blast Engineers. You will be part of a successful team that enjoys what they do and value’s each other’s contributions. The role will require:

 

•    Planning of drill & blast designs and drill & load scheduling over the 3-month horizon;
•    Develop, audit and update key processes and procedures that underpin the team outputs;
•    Drive conformance to plan through engagement with operations and other Tech Service teams;
•    Highlight and mitigate drill and blast risk to plan in the short and midterm horizons;
•    Identify, plan, and execute business improvement initiatives;
•    Coach and mentor other engineers and graduates; 
•    Ensure compliance to legislative requirements and site standards;

To be successful in the role you will also display the following skills and attributes:


•    A Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or in a related discipline;
•    10 years’ experience in an open cut environment with 5 years in Drill and Blast;
•    5 years’ experience in a leadership role
•    Ability to deliver intricate blasts that align with our social license to operate.
•    Experience with CAD design software packages such as Deswik, Shot Plus, or Vulcan;
•    An eye for detail and an ability to develop practical and achievable drill and blast designs and schedules;
•    Effective communication and time management skills coupled with an ability to problem-solve;
•    Ability to build effective relationship and influence with key stakeholders across the business;
•    Brings a can-do attitude and has a positive impact on culture;
•    Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite;
 

Desirable criteria:


•    Sound knowledge of relevant Mining Legislation and industry practice;
•    Strong numerical analysis and data validation skills;
•    Experience with Blast Logic.
