Owned and Operated by Yancoal Australia, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an open cut mine that provides the opportunity to live and work locally. Located 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, and only an hours drive from Newcastle, MTW relies on both dragline and load haul systems for their continuous operations. The MTW Mine is the largest open cut operation in the region, employing approximately 1,450 people who reside in the local and surrounding communities.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Mid - Term Planning Superintendent is accountable for providing strong leadership and direction to the Medium-Term Planning team to drive an inclusive culture that enhances the Yancoal – Our Way while ensuring plan on a page targets are achieved and medium term Mine planning processes are delivered on target and to schedule. As a key leader in the Technical Services team, this role will use a proactive, innovative and solution based approach to continually forecast, identify and adapt to deviations to the Mine Plan to ensure that the team is set up for success to achieve targets.
The role will require you to:
- Proactively lead and inspire a team of mining engineers responsible for the mid and long term planning horizons;
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the operation by identifying and evaluating opportunities for change and innovation in Mine Planning and the Medium Term Mine Plan; and
- Effectively engage and challenge the mining team to ensure the mine plan is achieved.
Skills and Experience

- Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering or related discipline;
- Proven leadership experience;
- Mine planning experience within an open cut coal mine;
- Strong planning and organisational skills, as well as strong numerical analysis and data validation skills;
- Sound knowledge of Australian WHS Standards, relevant mining legislation and industry practice.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across all levels of the business;
- A can-do attitude which has a positive impact on culture;
- High level of computer literacy, specifically in mine planning systems - Deswik, Spry or similar packages;
- Open Cut Examiner’s and/or MEM (NSW) qualification and practicing certificate
