GEOLOGY SUPERINTENDENT

Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is seeking an experienced and motivated Geology Superintendent to lead our geology and geotechnical functions. Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, this critical leadership role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and value-driven delivery of geological and geotechnical services that support mining operations and Life of Mine objectives.

Owned and Operated by Yancoal Australia, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an open cut mine that provides the opportunity to live and work locally. Located 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, MTW relies on both dragline and load haul systems for their continuous operations. The MTW Mine is the largest open cut operation in the region, employing approximately 1,450 people who reside in the local and surrounding communities.

 

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to influence the strategic direction of the operation while leading a team of geological professionals and partnering closely with Mining, Technical Services, Coal Quality, and Processing teams.

 

As Geology Superintendent, you will provide leadership across all geology and geotechnical activities, ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely technical information to support operational and strategic decision-making. You will also be responsible for:

 

  • Leading the geology and geotechnical teams to deliver safe and effective outcomes.
  • Overseeing geological modelling, resource definition, grade control, and reconciliation processes.
  • Managing coal quality performance and supporting product quality objectives.
  • Ensuring effective geotechnical risk management, slope monitoring, and pit performance assessment.
  • Providing technical input into mine planning, operational execution, and Life of Mine planning activities.
  • Maintaining compliance with statutory, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives across geology and geotechnical systems and processes.
  • Developing team capability and fostering a high-performance culture aligned with Yancoal's values.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role you will also display the following skills and attributes:

  • A tertiary qualification in Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in open-cut mining operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of geological modelling, grade control, reconciliation, and coal quality management.
  • Experience in geotechnical risk management and slope performance monitoring.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • A commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
