Located 14km northwest of Singleton, Ashton Underground Mine has been operational for over 20 years. The mine produces semi-soft coking coal for export through the Port of Newcastle, for use in the steel manufacturing industry and thermal coal for power generation. Ashton employs approximately 330 people across the surface and underground operations. 

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

As a member of the Asset Management team, you will be responsible for leading medium to long term asset planning, reliability optimisation and project delivery for the conveyor and auxiliary services asset portfolio at Ashton. The role applies disciplined, lifecycle based asset mangement practices to achieve asset availability, productivity, risk and cost outcomes aligned with the Asset Life Cycle Management Plan and Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP).

 

This role is responsible for:

 

  • Leading equipment planning and budget development across three month to five year horizons for all elements of the conveyor and auxiliary services process
  • Optimising conveyor system and auxiliary services availability using structured reliability and risk‑based asset management practices
  • Optimising conveyor system and auxiliary services productivity to support operational performance requirements
  • Planning & executing conveyor and auxiliary services projects, ensuring alignment with safety, scope, cost, and schedule expectations
  • Establishing and maintaining systematic processes aligned with Ashton’s Asset Life Cycle Management Plan
  • Conducting the annual review and update of the Coal Clearance and Auxiliary Services Asset Management Plan (AMP)
  • Providing technical and asset management input into the annual review and update of Ashton’s Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP)
  • Ensuring conveyor process team activities align with site asset management objectives and lifecycle priorities
  • Utilising asset management and maintenance systems (e.g. SAP) as enabling tools to support asset knowledge, work management, and performance reporting
  • Providing engineering support to other process areas as required

Skills and Experience

To be successful in securing this role, you will possess the following skills & experience:

 

  • Practising Certificate of Mechanical Engineering Manager, or demonstrated progression toward obtaining this qualification (essential)
  • 3-5 years' experience in a similar role, preferably within an underground coal environment (essential)
  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering (highly desirable), or minimum recognised trade qualification
  • Strong capability in medium to long term asset planning and lifecycle cost management
  • Experience using Maintenance management systems (e.g. SAP) to support lifecycle execution and asset knowledge management
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining asset management frameworks and plans
  • Experience providing engineering support across multiple process areas and stakeholder groups
  • Demonstrated ability to apply reliability methodologies such as FMECA, RCA, RCM, and similar structured improvement processes
  • Project planning and execution skills within operational environments
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Use of dynamic fluid flow modelling software relevant to auxiliary services systems and auxiliary system design (E.g. Fluid Flow)
  • Asset lifecycle management principles and practices (ISO 55000).
  • Conveyor systems, auxiliary services such as compressed air and dewatering systems.
  • Availability, productivity, and reliability optimisation in asset‑intensive environments
  • Competent in the use of MS Office/Excel
